"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile admirers have publicly coveted the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals often feature them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage people to form a group."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The group are speaking from a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words detail departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound toughness called for a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's openness shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

However the band will always be their number one priority.

"We have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
